Matt Goodwin recently shared a quote from a paywalled post that read “No less than 74% of Brits recently told pollsters Ipsos-MORI they think large-scale civil unrest is inevitable, while many clearly believe we need full-scale political revolution and a new “Cromwell-type figure”.
Having checked it out, it seems to be findings from a group of 1,000 people. So that 74% is 74% out of 1,000 people. Sources for a “new Cromwell-type figure” are not provided. Could be hidden in the pay-walled post. Though if there are “many” who long for a Cromwell type they will surely reside among Goodwin’s followers. So we can treat that as irrelevant.
Here’s a stat that came out today, provided by the Office of National Statistics. The homicide rate in the UK is the lowest it has been since 1977, with 499 victims of murder (that are known about, at least). This despite the UK having a growth in population of around 15-20 million people and seeing large numbers of immigration in the last 25 years or so. More generally, violent crime is decreasing, as is burglary and theft. This means that Britain is safer now than it was in the 70s, 80s and 90s, a period the Right seems to be pining for, and when immigration was much lower.
I’m not saying that the UK is a haven, or that the levels of crime are acceptable, but I think its important to continually chip away at this kind of nonsense whenever we see it. As I wrote last week, we must always expose the Great Lie every time it makes an appearance.
Many factors will be at play in the decrease in violent and visible crimes, such as increases in surveillance and improvements in forensic technologies, for example, but we can also point out that crime is falling despite overcrowded prisons, massive cuts to police forces across the UK and reduction in the presence of police officers on the streets.
So why do UK towns and cities feel so unsafe (they do often feel unsafe)? I would argue that it is a direct result of 2010’s austerity and general lack of investment in public services. Homelessness, mental illness, poverty, addiction are all persistent and pervasive in UK society. Strains on health care and other essential sectors have made them unfit for the current population size. This is not a criticism of mass immigration per se, but it is a fact that the NHS, for example, is seriously struggling to meet user demand, and has been for some time.
Our education system at school level is inadequate, which is again a consequence of under-investment. Children’s needs, and the needs of young low-income families, are simply not being met. In short, it is the structural element of UK society that is fundamentally failing the population. And no matter where your finger points, even if when at immigration, there is one entity that is omnipresent - capitalism.
I don’t think Goodwin knows this. Like the rest of the faux intelligentsia of right-wing commentariat, Goodwin is an idiot. But he’s a racist idiot, running to be an MP. Therefore he needs paying attention to.
I have a lot of evidence, by the way, that demonstrates Goodwins idiocy, but let’s stick to the quoted post. To pine for a “Cromwell-type figure” is incredibly stupid, even for some who is staunchly anti-Monarchy, like myself. Cromwell was a military dictator in essence. He was also a religious fundamentalist and, frankly, a mass murdering psychopath. But the latter is just par for the course by the standards of 9th - 20th century Britain, I suppose. Probably still is in some respect. And going off people like Matt Goodwin!
Though I don’t get what Goodwin wants with a “Cromwell-type figure.” Does he want to abolish the Monarchy? Not that I know of. Does he want to implement Puritan laws in a barbaric way? Maybe? Or does he just have a clue what he’s talking about? Probably.
